Davey Hamilton in the Firestone Indy Lights
It’s not what you think. Davey Hamilton will join the ranks in the Firestone Indy Lights in 2009 not as a driver, but as an owner. He has teamed up with Doc Wagner to run a 2 car Firestone Indy Lights effort for the whole 2009 season with Logan Gomez and Brendan Wagner behind the wheel. This news comes just a few days after Bryan Herta announced that he is going to start a Firestone Indy Lights team as well. It would seem that the IndyCar grid continues to shrink while the Firestone Indy Lights one grows. It should be interesting to see how the 2009 season plays out.

Could the Indy Lights be 24-30 cars deep? I keep hearing announcements on new teams, all multi-car teams too. Im just curious what a rough car count for this seris is? I never hear of teams closing, just being bought out or new operations.

It would seem that the car count is increasing. I can’t recall hearing anything about teams pulling out. I will have to look into it further.

I hope Davey hangs in there and is successful as an owner… Owners who have also been drivers tend to be more dedicated to the sport than a businessman who gets into it because it’s the thing to do.
Hopefully with Versus covering te IndyCar Series, it’ll have some effect on the Firestone Indy Lights and get them more exposure as well…
